Yankee Rowe Vapor Container Decommissioning

S.A.Technology submitted an unsolicited proposal to DEMCO, Inc., to provide equipment and services for the dismantling of the Vapor Container (VC) at Yankee Atomic Electric Company Power Station in Rowe, Massachusetts (Yankee Rowe). S. A. Technology is offering an alternative solution to remove the Vapor Container in manageable sections while maintaining control of hazardous materials and providing a safe work environment. The VC is a 125-foot diameter steel sphere that was complicated by various degrees of shielding and contamination present in and around the spherical structure.

Several criteria were analyzed to determine a best fit solution, including:

Studying these variables can help to determine optimal solutions .  S.A.Technology can simulate many varied cutting sequences; simulation saves time and money by highlighting potential areas of failure prior to commencement of actual demolition activities.  Through the use of FEA, failure modes are exposed, and alternative solutions can be found, which go a long way toward reducing risk.

Crane Operations

S.A.Technology provides a detailed analysis of the holes cut in the main structure as well as the holes cut in each section (for clamping / rigging locations). Tabulated cranes and wind loads are present to assist crane operators throughout their operations. Displacements, shear stresses, and von Mises stresses are calculated for each step of the final dismantlement sequence. Animations are created, using the same database as was employed for the analysis. These animations quickly convey to management, foremen, and trade workers the steps involved in the project.

A safe, effective solution was determined to allow several of the more complicated portions of the demolition to be conducted with total confidence. S.A.Technology is proud to have helped return reactors, vapor containment domes, and other supporting structures to "green field" conditions on time and within budget
