On-Site Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC)

A great example of S.A.Technology’s on-site engineering, procurement, and construction capabilities is the equipment the company designed and used to decommission the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor.

Engineer

S.A.Technology engineered a bridge and trolley system to operate a remote excavator to remove 700 metric tons of graphite from the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor. This system was engineered as a stand-alone rail system that would have to stand 40' high over the top of the reactor core and needed to support the operations and stress of 70 tons of moving bridge crane and excavator gantry that would dismantle the inside of the reactor

Procure

Procurement operations on this project included: two excavators, ventilation system, video system, containment system, custom tooling, 150 tons of steel for a stand-alone rail system, and a five-ton A crane for removal of graphite blocks.

Construct

The entire stand-alone rail system was constructed on-site and included manual facility demolition and onsite fabrication. Once the rail system was complete, the bridge, trolley, and excavator systems were integrated and set into place. From there, the construction of the containment unit was built. When it was completed and sealed, the remote excavator system was tested and made ready to start decommissioning the reactor.

In-House Engingeer, Procure, Construct (EPC)

S.A.Technology specializes in the engineering, procurement, and construction of high-tech remote and semi-remote equipment. This equipment is built and tested in-house to be delivered and installed on-site. A premier example is the equipment that was built to remotely segment a reactor vessel at the Rancho Seco site.

Engineer

S.A.Technology engineered a rail and mass system that positioned a Waterjet cutting manipulator inside the reactor vessel to cut up the reactor. The system was engineered to move over the top of the reactor to provide smooth and steady movement of the manipulator to slowly segment the vessel into manageable pieces.

Procure

S.A.Technology’s approved NQA-1 vender list was the basis for procuring the materials used, including steel, electrical boxes, Waterjet heads, carbon-fiber tubing, pumps, process skid, and a cable management system.

Construct

Construction and initial assembly of equipment was all performed in-house. Once the equipment had been tested and assembled at S.A.Technology, it was broken down in to installation segments and shipped to the Rancho Seco site. Onsite, S.A.Technology’s team installed and set up all equipment to begin vessel decommissioning.

Engineering

S.A. Technologies has built an engineering organization that has all the talent and experience necessary for the design, fabrication, and testing of custom equipment in a highly regulated environment. This emphasis on keeping as much engineering in-house as possible has given us a rare combination of breadth and expertise. By performing nearly all machine, control, civil/structural, process and manufacturing designs on-site we are able to efficiently control and integrate complex multi-discipline design problems in a very efficient manner. This has allowed us to perform and be successful on project that other engineering organizations have struggled with.
